Week 1 – September 4, 2022
Week 1 of the Merry Cabin Quilt Along is here!
This is a preparation week gathering fabrics, pressing your fat quarters, and identifying any of those pesky directional fabrics.
If you care about directional prints – use the cutting diagram from the welcome email! I created that template when I made my first Cozy Cabin Quilt (photo below) which had a TON of directional prints. While the template is a little funky, it will work!
If directional prints do not apply cut according to the pattern directions!
If you are using the Cheery and Merriment fabric like I am, you do not have to worry about directions! Which is awesome!
Pressing: Press those fat quarters!
Cutting through the wrinkles is never a good idea – been there, done that! When the one piece you need is way too small from cutting into a wrinkle and you are out of fabric you will be grateful you pressed your fabric.
Food for Thought: What are your thoughts on steam?
Starching: This pattern has tight cutting directions. Like end to end, top to bottom total usage of the fat quarter tight. Which is great, but not sure it would be so great if you starched your fabric.
I know nothing about starch except that it makes your fabric extra stiff but shrinks it in the process. If you are known starcher – you do you! You know what works. If you are beginner starchers – avoid this quilt!
What I will be using: I am going to make the Bed Size Quilt using the kit from the shop for this Quilt Along!
While I made the throw size for a sample (above) and love it, I am excited to see the difference in color from the Throw Size with 15 FQB and the Bed Size 22 FQB.
The background fabric is Moda Bella Solids Eggshell.
Helpful Tools for Week 2: I will link through Amazon and Fat Quarter Shop based on where you love to shop!
Week 2: September 18th!
The quilt along is going to be every two weeks! Life is BUSY – so take your time! Sew a few hours a day, a week, whatever you can fit in!
